Why Am I Blogging in English?

February 14, 2017

MMU Melaka
Because I'm not a good Malay speaker?? Nahhhhhhh hahahahahha....

First and foremost, English is not my forte and obviously I’m not a native speaker.

Malay is my mother tongue. Writing in English is very different and it’s so difficult for me to distinguish between two accents at the same time even though I'm just writing.

I would say that when it comes to the communication and elaboration stuff, I will prefer to deliver it in my own language. Yes, I feel more confidence, have a better grip of local sayings, and secure from any misunderstanding.

Plus, when I write in my own language, I do believe that I can build closer relationships with other bloggers especially from my region, Malaysia, but the consequence is my words couldn’t reach to the edges of the world since Malay isn’t the world’s lingua franca.

Back to my story hahahahaha…. Frankly speaking, I choose English because I want to enhance my English skills. Yup! For real, I’m not a good speaker nor writer. I love to learn many languages (including Germany) but I haven’t master them yet.

So, as a forward move, I decided to have a blog and post some of my thoughts. With intention, hoping that people who read my words can help me improve my English.

At first, I was a bit scared and overthinking about what my friends and other people might say, maybe some will start talking at our back, judging and keep criticizing our words.
“Your sentence is such a mess”, “Your English is so broken” or maybe “You should stop, seriously”. I took those words as an encouragement and believe in myself that I can do better and better next time.

I believe that, I won’t know it until I start! It’s just my negative-brainy side that keep teasing me *sigh.

Be Confident!

Instead of giving up, I promise to myself that I will work harder and prove that I’m not like what they said.

Other than that, I found that when I’m writing in my own language, my target group will be smaller, than writing in a global language like English – a language many Internet users speak. Since my goal is to spread my words across the atmosphere, I choose to write in English because writing in English will naturally have a bigger audience and more readers.

So, for all that would like to blog in English but are too afraid to try (like me), I'd like for them to try to write at least one post. You can write about any topic that you like. For those of you who write in English and it's not your mother tongue (also like me hehe…)Keep calm, for me the things in blogging is being yourself, mistakes and all. As the saying goes, mistake is the best teacher. Teacher is a lovely person.

So why should we be afraid, right?

but, some teachers might be a little bit fierce tho. Jaga-jaga hahahahahahah!!!!

  5. Hi! First of all, you have a good grammar. English is also not my native language but I prefer using it. Don't be bothered much by your grammar because sometimes its not the grammar that counts, its how you convey your ideas. Lastly, we're don't need to please others, just be yourself! :)

  7. My reasons are pretty much the same as yours although I have one additional reason which is - writing in English makes me look more professional and mature instead of Malay. Atleast that's what I thought haha I'm more comfortable (and proficient) talking using the English slang instead of the formal boring English. Probably because I watched way too much English tv shows and youtube videos.

  8. I actually just change my blog language to English in mid Nov last year. Can I just say that I blog in English because everybody does? Hahaha.

Along with, I started being serious in blogging and I want to blog professionally but with a friendly manner too? And Malay couldn't do both, especially the personal pronouns are better in English. But sometimes I use rojak Malay-English though.

  15. takpalah, yg lain comment in english, sy komen BM la 😉 situasi yg selalu berlaku, grammar salah diejek. sebut salah pun diejek 😒. sy mmg lemah english, yg ejek sy pun bukan org lain, sepupu sendiri 😠 kadang2, kerana ejekan tu lah akan buat kita rasa down. sy cuba bangkit, rajinkan diri untuk bljr English & Arab. alhamdulillah, walau tak lancar macam air mengalir tapi dah boleh speaking dua bahasa tu dgn lectures 😄 yg penting, keberanian harus ada

    1. Hahahaha.. wahh bahasa Arab lagi power kak.. Untung lah dpt blajar banyak bahasa asing. Yang penting niat tu untuk cari ilmu dah cukup bagus. Pasal kena ejek tu, take it as a challenge.. Baru bersemangat hihihi..

    2. kan, memula memang semangat akan down 😢. tapi bila fikiran dah normal, hati dah sado 💪 apa yg diejek tu, take it as a challenge 😉 pening juga bljr bahasa arab, tapi bila org sekeliling lancar arab, tu yg bersemangat. tak hirau dah kepeningan yg melanda 😄

  16. Its actually good to blog in English! And agreed with your point that if writing in Malay, tak semua org dapat baca. I mean, if you want your blog to be known internationally, kena lah tulis dlm English. Pedulikan grammar error etc sbb mat salleh yg non native english speaker pun fail jugak bab grammar :P
